Chapter 13

Longarm and Laura rode out of Flagstaff about ten o’clock the next morning, on a cold and overcast day. The huge San Francisco Peaks were cloaked in wet, gray clouds, and they could hear the distant rumble of thunder.

“I’m glad we bought a couple of rain slickers,” Longarm said as they followed a well-traveled road that roughly paralleled the Union Pacific rails westward toward California. “I think we’re in for a downpour.”

Laura nodded. She looked exhausted from the previous night’s lovemaking and lack of sleep. Longarm hoped that they might find lodging for the night, even if it was in some rancher’s barn. Anything to get out of a storm in this high country. He didn’t expect that they would have to contend with snow, but at seven thousand feet, you could get it almost any time of the year.

“This is pretty country,” she said, admiring the forest and meadows they were passing. “But I haven’t seen even one river.”

“Rivers are rare in Arizona. There are a few. The Gila, the Salt, and the Verde, and of course the territory’s north boundary is the Colorado River, which formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years.”

“So how do the ranchers and towns get their water supply?”

“They dig deep wells and they have little lakes here and there. But water is precious up in this mountain country. That’s why you don’t see as many cattle here as in Colorado, Montana, or Wyoming.”

“Do you think that we’ll reach the Pittman Ranch before dark?”

“I don’t know,” Longarm replied. “But I expect we will. I’m thinking that it might be to our advantage to arrive about sunset. Supper will be on the table and everyone on the ranch will be gathered in one place, which is good.”

“I sure hope this works out.”

“You told me early this morning that you knew it would,” Longarm reminded her. “Are you having second thoughts about coming along with me instead of going to the Grand Canyon?”

“Sure I am,” she said a little irritably. “But I’m no quitter and I’m not fainthearted. I’ll do my part.”

“I’ve no doubt about that, Laura.”
